Dunottar

We went to Dunottar castle (just outside Stonehaven) this weekend. It’s an impressive ruin that in the past has been haunted by Picts, plundered by Vikings and burned by William Wallace; it’s been a home to the Keiths, a holiday home for Mary Queen of Scots and a prison for theives. In 1685 one hundred and sixty seven opponents of the king were locked in an airless, freezing chamber there called the Whig’s Vault – after being inside it, I can’t even imagine how they all fit. Pretty spooky.

It’s also an excellent place to play hide and seek.
